Aswara: The show goes on
THE annual international dance event, Tari 09, by Aswara (Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan) was postponed due to the current H1N1 situation.
However, the institute’s head of dance faculty Joseph Gonzales says the event will still go on with a local bent.
Titled Lepas, to be held July 17-19, the school will offer a fiesta of dance that celebrates a spirit that cannot be quelled or a fire that cannot be extinguished.
The title “Lepas” has a two-fold meaning, he offers, one referring to the postponement and the other to the release of energy.
Performers include James Kan, Jessica Ho and Liu Yong Sean together with Kim Jung-yeon from the Korean National University of Arts, South Korea, Wendy Rogers and Jennifer Twilley from the United States, a new site-specific work by Shafirul Azmi Suhami and others.
Come Aug 1-2, in collaboration with Maya Dance Theatre of Singapore, 10 Aswara dancers will perform The Legend: The Journey Begins… under the artistic direction of Kavitha Krishnan.
This is a full-length 90-minute production interpreting the epic tale of Ramayana. The production features I Nyoman Budi Aritha from Indonesia and Ajith Baskaran Dass from Malaysia with lighting design by Naomi Matsumoto from Japan.
Gonzales says this collaboration began last year with rehearsals at the Aswara premises and has continued over the following six months to develop a work that cohesively puts together a dance vocabulary drawn from Balinese, Indian and Malay cultures. The dancers, Fairul Zahid, Naimsyahrazad, Shaikh Hasrul Anuar, Hazri Hazmi and Hanafi Rosdi, will perform three contemporary works — Tapak 4, Varsha and Line. For more details, visit http://www.goethe.de.
